David, a former New York Times journalist, finds himself in a nightmarish situation when he and his neighbor Robert accidentally hit a girl on her bike. In a state of confusion, David allows Robert to convince him to flee the scene and leave the girl for dead in order to protect his career. As Robert becomes increasingly ruthless in his efforts to keep the secret, David's life spirals out of control when he is assigned to cover the story of the hit-and-run for his local newspaper and meets the sister of the deceased girl, Vanessa. Despite the tragic circumstances, David and Vanessa are immediately drawn to each other, causing David to question his actions and Robert to take drastic measures to keep David to himself.
