A group of females living in a secluded Mennonite community must decide how to deal with the aftermath of sexual assaults committed by the men of the colony. They are faced with the difficult choice of either staying and fighting for change within their community, leaving, or taking no action at all. The story is inspired by the book of the same name by Canadian author Miriam Toews, who wrote it as a fictional response to real-life events that occurred in the Manitoba Colony, a distant Mennonite settlement in Bolivia. The novel and the film both deal with the struggle of the women to reconcile their beliefs and values with the reality of the abuse they have suffered.
